Communication and tv.
I watched The Mentalist for the first time. The commercials seemed interesting to me because it reminded me of one of my favorite shows Psych. I watched it with the volume off at first.
What do you think the characters’ relationships are based on the ways in which they are communicating?
Looking at the interactions of the characters I saw them as a team. They talked a lot to each other and were always around each other.
What are they feeling and expressing based on the nonverbal behavior you are observing?
I saw confused faces, fingers pointing, and embracing of victims’ families.
Now, watch the show with the sound turned on.
What assumptions did you make about the characters and plot based on the ways in which you interpreted the communication you observed?
I first tried to decide who was in charge on the show because the person that appeared to be the one that everyone kept reporting to wasn’t the person that was solving the cases. I assumed that a man had feelings for one of the detectives by the way he looked at her and continued to try to be around her.
Would your assumptions have been more correct if you had been watching a show you know well?
My assumptions probably would have been better had I been more familiar with the show because I could have had the background information on the characters and the makeup of the program.
Write about your experience in your blog, including what you learned about communication from this experience and insights or “aha” moments you believe would be helpful to your colleagues.
Aha moments that I had watching this show was that you can look at the way people move and their body language and detect some of their feelings. However, you still have to be careful because everyone might use the same action for different reasons. For example, someone yelling might not be in anger but they might be trying to warn someone of danger.
Dewana,
ReplyDeleteI watch the Mentalist often, and I am still confused as to who is in charge, it seems to rotate back and forth.
I did find this assignment really interesting watching a show without the sound and then turning the sound on. I found that not having heard the first part of the show, just pictures, made it challenging to determine to whole scenrio. It was good for me to watch the nonverbals and how much they impacted the whole of the show.
Thank you for your great post.
Dewanns,
ReplyDeleteI think its interesting how we both chose shows similar to what we would normally watch. I love HGTV but I chose to watch a show similar in nature on the travel channel. I enjoyed reading your post and comparing similarities.

Christine,
ReplyDeleteI love the mentalist, well I did when I had a chance to watch television. Since beginning this degree program I haven't seen much of anything. It does seem like there is a little chemistry between Jane and his boss, Lizbin. You picked a good sitcom I think. It is similar to Psych, I think I have seen it once. It is interesting to watch a show with no sound. It does allow you to really be aware of what if going on in regards to body movement and facial expressions. I think I will be continuing to watch with the sound on, but it did allow me to see communication differently.

The above response is for DeWana.
DeleteSorry DeWana I accidentally typed Christine's name instead of yours. I was writing to you. I get a little confused when viewing all the blogs sometimes.

DeWanna, I love the Mentalist and watch it all the time. I bet the lead character's body language was interesting to watch without the sound. I think that alot of what his character protrays is through gestures and facial expression. Great Post.
ReplyDeleteDeWana,
ReplyDeleteMy sister has been trying to get me to watch The Mentalist for the exact reason you mentioned because we love Psych. I have yet to watch it but I have seen previews from the show that look very interesting. A lot of what I've seen that I find interesting has to do with facial expressions. The lead character seems to have quite a few expressions and yes I agree sometimes non-verbal cues can be misleading.
