Examining Codes of Ethics

These are the three codes of ethics that I feel best express my feelings when it comes to being a quality teacher.  It is always important that we remember to treat each child as an individual and to embrace their lifestyles.  This will only help the child to feel more comfortable in the learning environment and encourage a positive learning experience.

By recognizing that children are raised by their villages, we recognize the importance of having family and community involvement in each child’s life.  We can help the student connect with family and also be a resource that will help bring the family and community together to better help with the growth and development of the student.

When I began to understand that I was not a babysitter but a teacher, I was able to embrace my job in a new light that lead me to want to do and learn more.  I now know how important it is to stay up to date on new developments and changes within my career.  This will help me to make educated and informed decisions regarding teaching, connecting to the community, and helping the parents of the children that I care for.

Appreciate childhood as a unique and valuable stage
of the human life cycle( NAEYC.  Retrieved: Aug.10, 2011).

Recognize that children are best understood and
supported in the context of family, culture, community,
and society( NAEYC.  Retrieved: Aug.10, 2011). .

We shall strive for the highest level of personal and professional competence by seeking and using new evidence based information to improve our practices while also responding openly to the suggestions of others ( DEC.  Retrieved:Aug.10, 2011).

  1. DeWanna,

I agree that we need to treat each child as an individual and embrace their lifestyles. I have learned this through my personal experience as a teacher as well. Children are different and we must be aware of their differences in order to successfully educate them.

  2. Understanding a families value system is key to understanding a child. It is something I work at all the time.

  3. DeWana: As an early childhood professional, I also appreciate that early childhood is a unique and valuable experience in each child’s life. In my professional career, I want to value each child’s individual uniqueness, and encourage them to value their autonomy through self expression and art.

  4. I enjoyed reading the ideals you selected. You are right, we should embrace each child's family and culture. We should learn about the communities our families reside, as this will help us to individualize, as well as, coordinate effective community partnerships that will enhance and extend service delivery.

I feel we have similar views in regards to why we are part of this field with both of us being drawn to what Louise Derman-Sparks had to say on the videos we watched. Thank you for your thoughtful responses on my blog page and I wish you continues success as we journey towards our Master's Degrees.

  9. Hi Dewana,

I feel the same way. When I started my current job, it was the first time I actually felt like I wasn't babysitting. I realized that I was actually important to shaping my kids and making their first impression of school a good one. Being so young, the kids are with us for 8 hours of the day, so our classrooms are like their home away from home. It does take a village to raise a child. So it is important that we receive a quality education and do our part for the children and their families as well.
